Antiques and Antiquing... in and around Madoc

Antique lovers will find plenty of opportunity to indulge their passion while staying at the Spotted Dog B and B in Madoc. In addition to the many small antique dealers in the area, we are located midway between two multi-vendor antique malls, and estate auctions are regular and popular events.

Our favourite multi-vendor mall is also the closest - Country Garden Antiques, run by David Stratuik, located just 5 minutes west of the Spotted Dog on highway 7. Between 20-25 vendors offer everything from furniture to collectables in a welcoming, professional atmosphere. While at Country Garden, stop at Winnie's Diner - one of the best places in the area for good simple food, all freshly prepared, at reasonable prices. Jane Brownson's pies are famous and freshly baked every day. The pecan pie, warm from the oven is sweet, sticky and delicious, while the lemon meriangue is a towering sight to behold!

Bridgewater Antiques, located on Highway 37 at the north end of Tweed, about 15 minutes from the Spotted Dog, is another multi-vendor experience, with up to two dozen vendors represented at any one time.

There are many other great antiquing opportunities nearby. The following are some of our favourties:

  • The Madoc Tea Room: Mary Naylor runs this small but jam-packed antique room, right in the heart of Madoc - a pleasant walk from the B and B.
  • Gaylord's: Just North of Tweed on the east side of Highway 37, with a good collection featuing beaultiful furniture and a wide array of antique clocks. Visit Gaylord's at the same time as the nearby Bridgewater multi-vendor market.
  • Blythewood Antiques, Art and Collectibles: At 1647 Cooper Rd., less than 10 minutes from the Spotted Dog, just off Highway 62.
  • Old Forge Antiques: About 10 minutes south of Madoc on Highway 62.

While at The Spotted Dog, let us help you plan your antiquing adventure. We have brochures for each of the above locations, plus you can use the following information resources:

  • The "Country Roads North of Belleville" listing of seven unique "shoppes", all offering you something different at affordable prices - and none more than half an hour from our B and B.
  • Auction listings in The Belleville Intellgencer (daily), The Madoc Shield (weekly), and The Community Press (weekly).
  • A little further afield, there are 10 antique and collectible outlets North of Madoc extending up to the Bancroft area.
  • The Wayback Times published by Good Writtens Publishing in Belleville, provides province-wide listings of antique dealers, resources, events, and shows. Pick up a copy of The Wayback Times while you are at Country Garden Antiques.
